Alumnae, Students, and Faculty
About the STEM Professional Development Committee
WHO ARE WE?
The STEM Professional Development Committee was created and is run by a group of highly dedicated STEM students, alumnae, and faculty. Started in 2016, we are dedicated to supporting the women of Saint Mary's College, where 23% of the SMC STEM students are first-generation, 17% are women of color, and 21% have exceptional financial need.
WHAT DO WE DO?
For the almost 200 Saint Mary’s students pursuing STEM degrees, it takes not only technical knowledge but also a unique professional skillset to succeed. We provide professional development, including career guidance, networking opportunities, and essential skills development, to current students. This includes both annual in-person professional development workshops and virtual events.
WHY IS THIS SO IMPORTANT?
Despite receiving 50% of all STEM bachelor’s degrees, women still make up only about one quarter (27%) of the STEM Workforce. We provide alumnae mentorship, networking, and community building and draw upon a “pay it forward” approach to create the next generation of women leaders in STEM.
